Leadership is rewarded

Standing up in front of a crowd, especially family and friends, had Jacqueline Hawthorn bursting with pride as she received her Impetus Youth Award for Leadership recently. The award recognises an individual who has demonstrated leadership and made significant achievements in their field of education, business, or government, and thereby made a noteworthy contribution to their community. Starry dreams come true

The girls looked beautiful and their partners stunning for the Karingal Presentation Ball on May 21. The event, run in conjunction with Zonta, saw 15 couples presented to Geelong’s Mayor, Cr John Mitchell, followed by a night of dinner and dancing.

Volunteers thanked for dedication

Around 100 hard-working Karingal volunteers and their families enjoyed getting together in May for the annual Karingal Volunteer Presentation event at the Ford Discovery Centre. Karingal Chief Executive Officer Daryl Starkey thanked all those who had given their time over the past year to work with people with disabilities, mental illness and the frail aged.

Insurance scheme pivotal for future

For too long people with disabilities have not had an automatic entitlement to support. There is no system which provides universal cover for disability services like the Australia-wide Medicare scheme, which entitles everyone to basic health cover. Funding to provide disability support services is for the most part a rationed system as there is not enough money to respond adequately to each person. This in turn creates a crisis driven system.

Konnections blooms in Mornington

The past seven months has seen a period of great change for Karingal’s newest branch, Konnections. The organisation spread its wings across the bay in October last year when Disability Opportunities Victoria (DOV) became a branch of Karingal. Konnections Manager Sonia Berton said while change had brought challenges, there had been many rewarding times in watching Konnections grow.
