Karingal and St Laurence merge to form a stronger local voice

Karingal will merge with another leading Geelong-based community service organisation St Laurence following an announcement last Friday August 5.

The announcement came after a vote by members of both organisations late last week, with the new entity to be known as Karingal St Laurence.  The two organisations will now spend time working towards transitioning their businesses into a single entity.  Until this process is completed, Karingal and St Laurence will continue to operate as separate organisations.

Positive partnership continues to blossom

A hands-on learning approach has laid the foundations for a successful and rewarding partnership between Karingal and Rosebud Secondary College (RSC).

Students from RSC who are completing their VCAL have selected Karingal for their student placements over the past decade. They have gained experience in areas such as horticulture and hospitality - two quality Karingal programs which have assisted the students with employability and industry skills. The placements have also supported students to connect with Karingal clients and gain a greater understanding of how important community inclusion is for people with a disability.

Having the difficult conversation

Communication - no matter how uncomfortable it is - was a key learning at a workshop titled 'A Palliative Approach for People Living with a Disability'.

Karingal partnered with Barwon South Western Region Palliative Care for the May 31 event, which explored a palliative approach and Advance Care Planning for people with a disability.

KarnivART brings together community

It was a night of celebration and colour at KarnivART Geelong, which attracted a record amount of entries.

Held at Eastern Hub Geelong for the first time, the annual Karingal BacLinks event welcomed more than 150 guests to the launch. KarnivART achieved its aim of encouraging and inspiring artists with a disability or mental illness, highlighted by an unprecedented 89 pieces in the exhibition.

Big Day Out spreads its wings to Wyndham

The Karingal Workplace Big Day Out broke new ground in May when it stretched to the Wyndham region for the first time.

The May 11 event was held at Werribee's Eagle Stadium, welcoming people with a disability who combined with corporate volunteers for a fun day out. Karingal BacLinks manager Joanne Forssman said both the Werribee event and the Geelong event on June 16 were successful.

Tick to train the trainers

The Department of Education released the approved provider list for Training and Assessment Qualifications (TAE) with Karingal Training one of only 17 providers in Victoria selected to deliver the qualification out of 438 VTG (Victorian Training Guarantee) funded RTOs (Registered Training Organisations).

Karingal Training will be the only Learn Local provider in the Barwon Region to offer the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, which is designed to develop the skills and knowledge to perform the role of a trainer, facilitator or assessor in the workplace and in RTOs.

Karingal Training manager Brett Cassar said it was a massive achievement. "It's great to be recognised as a leader in our field and have the opportunity to assist and develop more trainers," he said.
